University of Manitoba: Determining commercialisation potential using objective industry engagement data

The University of Manitoba is the oldest university in Western Canada, established in 1877, and amongst the leading research-intensive institutions across the country. Since joining IN-PART’s matchmaking platform in 2020, they have showcased a range of cutting-edge technologies which have been proactively shared to senior-level R&D professionals across our global industry network.

Minli Huang, from the Partnerships & Innovation team at the University of Manitoba, summed up their experience so far: “We’ve been using IN-PART for about a year and the business development activities have been great. In this time, we’ve received industry feedback on our technologies, and started conversations with companies via phone calls and email follow-ups. So far, we’ve been very satisfied and impressed by the results.”

Introductions made through IN-PART have helped Minli and her colleagues to establish new and ongoing relationships with a range of companies. In particular, by gaining access to the relevant R&D decision-makers through IN-PART, they have gained a clear understanding of each company’s strategic areas of focus. Minli explains, “That’s very helpful for us, especially during COVID when R&D priorities have been prone to change, so we can keep track if and when their interests shift from one particular technology to another.”

Alongside this, Minli has been using the new metrics and visual analytics on the Data Insights feature we launched earlier this year: “I am very impressed by the new dashboard –  it’s very helpful for data visualisation and the team loves it! It is very important for our university, especially for the tech transfer office, to get an objective measure of what types of technologies have commercialisation potential. The platform data provides us with the backup and the foundation for any conversations that we might need to have with the researchers, and the data also provides insight to the researchers for their ongoing research activities and technology commercialization.”
